Sonia and David have a true love of what some would call scrap, they grew up during a time when you were forced to use your imagination and see something inside of something. David is an Agricultural Mechanic by day but a driven Artisan by night. He has always been intrigued with discarded broken parts that are replaced with shiny new ones. And then this is what has brought him to the idea of recycling farm equipment parts. Each piece, one of a kind, and hand crafted is typically produced from 80-90% of recycled and/or found metals. They include Sundials, lawn decorations, garden sculptures, animals, birdbaths, flower planters and much more. Waste not want not is a good motto to live by in our society. David and Sonia are trying to do their part to take discarded items and create something that will ultimately be good for the planet and bring joy into someone’s life.

Jean started quilting about 20 years ago taking classes to assist her with calculations and designs. By looking at quilting books and trying different patterns on her own, she tackles new designs and challenging herself to complete projects. ‘Adding your own personal touch to the pattern allows you to make the quilt a little bit different. Colours play an important role in the finished design also. Quilting is not restricted only to quilts; but branches out to garments also.’ Her personally designed jackets with matching handbags have earned awards in local competitions.
She has always enjoyed sewing and encouraging others to try something new, and currently teaching classes 2 nights a week. She has been a guest instructor at weekend retreats as well as doing trunk shows for local guilds. Over her quilting career she has completed about 60-70 quilts of various degrees. Some being samples or gifts, and others being full size queen quilts as commissioned pieces.
Her favourite way of finishing quilts is with a domestic sewing machine, earning a Grand Champion of Show rosette with a local fair. She looks upon her sewing as an extension of her own fingers; a good working machine has the ability to be just as good as you are at the controls. Remember, a quilt is not a quilt until it is quilted.

M2 –Dan Monaghan – New Guest Artist – Sculpture
(Showing at 202 Hedge Road, Jackson's Point, ON) |

|
Dan Monaghan knew from an early age he was an artist. His kindergarten teacher noted his skill. Some 20 years later as a stock car driver, racing all over southern Ontario against the likes of such drivers as Alan Kulwicki, Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace at Cayuga Speedway. Dan was drawing and painting when he wasn’t driving. The tools of a mechanic and tools of the artist were handled with the same skill but, when renowned soap stone carver Ben Henry noted his friend’s artist skill, he posed the question; would Dan want to carve? Truth be told, Ben thought he might be trading an apprenticeship in carving for a driver that would drive exclusively for him. Stock car racing behind him, Ben Henry has proven himself a worthy mentor with a very able student.
Dan spent more and more time at the Six Nations Reserve honing his skills. It wasn’t long before he became a carver full time and his pieces have evolved into truly Johdan works of art. Johdan pieces show great respect for nature, bears and eagles are the main focus of Dan’s work but he has researched and brought to life; turtles, snakes and bullfrogs to name a few. He takes a great deal of pleasure in teaching students to carve in soapstone, there are no rules, only the release of young minds into the creative world. Dan is truly passing on his legacy and creating joy as he goes.

I recently graduated from Sheridan College where I continued to developed my passion for working with clay. As I experiment with new clay bodies and glazes my fascination with surface, texture and line continues to grow. My inspiration comes from nature and architecture. I am constantly attracted to the tension between the rich textures and colours of the natural world versus the stacking of architectural elements of the cityscape. Using surface texture combined with the variegated microcystaline glazes, I link man-made shapes with the soft lines of nature, mirroring the real-world intersection urban and rural landscapes. Also, my practical nature demands that I create functional items intended to be used and held. I am inspired by the worlds around me and my porcelain pots and glazes are the full expression of my creative endeavours.

Jamie also has a teaching studio where she inspires new potters to create and experienced potters to step outside of their comfort zones.

S – Lori-Anne Crittenden and John Ducker, A Simpler Time – Painter & Creators of Country Whimsy & Treasures
Lori-Anne Crittenden – Folk Artist
(Showing at Lisa Charlton Art & Gift Gallery, 23206 Miles Road, Sutton) |
|

|
Lori is an accomplished artist who paints everyday, needful items with a whimsical, country charm.
Her unique attention to detail and use of colour transform furniture, tin-ware, brooms, lamps, glassware & more from the ordinary, to heirloom quality collectables and functional works of art.
John Ducker – Multi-Media Metal Artist
John may be surprised to find himself an artist, though it is clear that a creative, artful self has been there all along patiently waiting to be discovered. How different metals feel and can be manipulated with simple tools, heat & imagination has inspired John to create extraordinary works of art.
He sees the original beauty in a piece of silver plate, and then manipulates it into a creation of his own, bringing the gifts of sound, colour and light to us in the form of wind chimes, suncatchers, bird houses and more.
Lori & John work from home (and cottage!) year round.
Open year round by chance or appointment.

S – Christine Aiken – Canadian Fossil Artist
(Showing at Lisa Charlton Art & Gift Gallery, 23206 Miles Road, Sutton) |

|
Her husband, Dave gathered fossils from the Great Lakes for 10 years. 15 years ago Christine started using the fossils to show her love of the ancient. She began with hunters/gatherers, shamans and healers, and over time, passion for family, home, dogs, walking outdoors and living in Ontario came from the fossils. Each creation comes with a narrative and these speak to the heart.

A master sign painter for over 35 years, Bill’s hand painted lettering talents have made for a seamless and enjoyable transition to the world of fine arts. A naturalist at heart, he creates land and seascapes using the natural grains found in wood surfaces as a means to ‘see’ the images he paints, thereby enhancing what nature has already created and also paints on traditional canvas.
Bill’s humour comes out in his whimsical bird sculptures, made from found forest wood. His whimsical bird creations have ‘Personalities’ you discover, when you try to pick one that suits you or your garden.

U – Laurie Larson – Stained Glass Artist
(Showing at Blue Willow Garden & Landscaping Centre & Butterfly Conservatory 23834 Hwy 48
(just south of Baldwin) 905-722-5849) |
|
 |
Laurie is an artist whose media is the traditional form of 'cold' stained glass, both copper foil and leaded, with a little mosaic work for added interest! Laurie learned her craft at Thornhill’s Glowing Panes Studio and fell in love with the art.
“It is a curious dichotomy – a juxtaposition of the creative and the technical”, explains Laurie. Laurie’s typical pieces reflect her love of nature, but occasionally she will branch out to something more abstract. She works in various genres but her style is all her own. Laurie designs and produces her creations, which include lampshades, windows and panels, garden stepping stones, and three dimensional decorative items. She accepts and enjoys commission work: “It is a challenge to give your client exactly what they want and at the same time to satisfy your own creativity.”

U – Carol Hendry – New Guest Artist – Painter
(Showing at Blue Willow Garden & Landscaping Centre & Butterfly Conservatory 23834 Hwy 48
(just south of Baldwin) 905-722-5849) |
Cash Only
| Carol is a self-taught artist gleaning her inspiration from nature and the special affect light plays. Her work is of the Impressionist style but she feels her most sincere work is when she paints intuitively.
“I love playing with the paint and seeing what unfolds.”
My breakthrough, with a newly found medium in oils, was going big. Just give me a wall! The second was using a large brush, which keeps me from fiddling. I find a joy of freedom from the physical sweeping movements I make that I hope evoke a sense of excitement to the viewer.
It was only recently I ran out in the snow with my camera and slippers on and no coat to catch a copper glow on our trees the sunset had created! Actually, everything inspires me!
One artist said to me at an exhibition “When you Plein Air paint you will really notice a change in your work for the better. This year I am looking forward to painting outside and excited to see what evolves.
I hope my paintings bring the emotion to a viewer that I first felt when starting a piece; Be it a mood, a beautiful light, or maybe it will conjure up a memory of a time past. Carol’s paintings can be seen in collections in Wales, England France and Canada.
