ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Laurie Larson Laurie is an arti ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Laurie Larson

Laurie is an artist whose media is the traditional forms of “cold” stained glass, both copper foil and leaded.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Laurie moved to the Toronto area in 1989 and currently works from her studio in Aurora, Ontario. The name of the company reflects her roots. Arbutus trees, native to the West Coast, generally only live within a few kilometres from the ocean.

Laurie learned her craft through lessons at Thornhill’s Glowing Panes Studio and fell in love with the art. “It is a curious dichotomy – a juxtaposition of the creative and the technical”, she explains.

Laurie designs and produces her own creations, which include lampshades, windows and panels, suncatchers – both two and three dimensional, garden stepping stones, candleholders and mosaics. She accepts and enjoys commission work: “It is a challenge to give your client exactly what they want and at the same time to satisfy your own creativity.”

Laurie’s art can be found in private collections all over the world: U.S.A., England, Germany, Hungary, Australia, and India. In 2002, she spent several weeks teaching stained glass in the Philippines.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Monty Fillier As a self-taught ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Monty Fillier

As a self-taught artist my paintings directly respond to the surrounding environment as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. It was a while before I discovered what modern art was all about. I’m sure it’s different for everyone. I realized very quickly that becoming an acrylic artist and creating abstract acrylic paintings allowed me to not focus on what I saw, but how I felt and the energy that came with that. I get to let go of my need for control, take risks, and lose myself in the process. The energy of a place and its emotional and spiritual vibrations are always important. My work has evolved over the years but my goal is to keep on learning new techniques and skills and have fun along the journey.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Barbara Banfield After twenty y ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Barbara Banfield

After twenty years designing and manufacturing in the garment industry it was time to embark on raising our three children. Always a love for working with my hands, clay became an active hobby. Over a period of 10 years I took countless hours of lessons, participated in students shows and sales, and spent many summers enrolled at the Haliburton School for the Arts, I became hooked on working with clay. This inspiration, found me at Sheridan College graduating with honors in 2010. Since this time I have continued the path of building my studio, making objects and selling my work.

I am a strong believer in pottery that celebrates daily life serving, receiving and the sharing of food and drink. I enjoy creating groupings of vessels that create a dialogue, both functional and sculptural. I am fascinated with process, shape, colour and texture drawing inspiration from the world that surrounds me, both natural and architecturally. Using a wide range of techniques to build forms, I find the challenge of surface and glazing exciting and the possibilities endless.

“A craftsman becomes an artist when he starts innovating. The experimenters blur the edges between craft and art, who can say if that is a pot or a sculpture”. NP: Crafty Artist Exhibits: Frank Ross

I have always had a strong desire to create. I studied Art and Interior Design at Georgian College and it was the art courses that sparked my interest and led me to my current career. I am an honours graduate of the Jewellery Essentials program at the Haliburton School of Art and Design where I achieved the Highest Grade Point Average. My one of a kind jewelry is formed using sterling silver, pure silver and copper and I incorporate Keum Boo and enamelling into my designs.

I am also a fibre artist and have taught felting at the Haliburton School of Art and Design. I have recently travelled to Hungary to study under three very talented felting artists and I am very excited about sharing my newly acquired skills with other felting enthusiasts.

My echo dyed silk scarves and apparel have attracted the attention of many at the Georgina Studio Tour. This is my fourth year participating in the tour and I am looking forward to meeting everyone. #gst2023 #georginastudiotour2023 #studiotour #localart #handcrafted #shoplocal #artistsofgeorgina #jewellery #fibrearts #denisemagloughlen @neeciewearableart

This past year has found me going in many different directions, learning new skills, honing others. Reaching past my pre-set boundaries and creating new ones. My interests have traveled from quilting to painting, to mixed media; always allowing myself to raise the bar. I have learned to strive to express myself to gain personal satisfaction so I might find great inner peace in all that I do in life. ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Andrea Macleod Andrea MacLeod w ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Andrea Macleod

Andrea MacLeod was born in St John’s, Newfoundland. Being the daughter of a Mountie, she found herself moving across Canada spending most of her childhood in rural Manitoba. Andrea grew up fascinated with animals and the human face. She could always be found with a pencil in hand, sketching and drawing portraits of friends, family, pets and various animals. Being inspired by the Policing world early on, Andrea aspired to become a Forensic Artist in hopes of sketching the faces of wanted suspects, victims of crime, and missing persons. Twenty years ago she began her journey to achieve this aspiration by joining the RCMP. She has since worked in Manitoba and Ontario, has performed general police duties, Protective Policing, and is currently working in the Forensic Identification Services Section. In the fall of 2013, Andrea finally made her dream a reality after successfully completing her Forensic Artist training at the Canadian Police College. Continuing in her fascination with the human form she decided to take up Acrylic painting as a new method to express this interest. She enrolled in an art program in Newmarket, Ontario, gaining valuable skills in a new medium. She found the vibrancy and range of colours available in acrylics better allowed her to express what she saw in people and animals—the life, emotion, endurance, conflict, challenge, fear, and vibrant joy in their faces.

“In the ugliness of my day to day work dealing with the worst of people, my art is my escape, my therapy, and my way to bring back beauty, grace, and humanity”.

I am a visual artist that works with egg tempera or acrylic.

I fell in love with egg at a Waldorf inspired art course. Having no previous art training, I never saw the world around me the same, some 15 years ago. For me painting is a celebration of colour and when we meet on the canvas, it’s a wonderful dance of inspiration and creativity. My work has been described as “having a universal energy that transfers onto the viewer in a most positive of ways”

Hats, neck warmers and half mittens are made from a variety of premium fibres in delicious colours.

Some of Susan’s work is just for fun; miniature mice, whimsical window cats and divinely soft bunnies and kittens. ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Jacques Bergeron (new GST artis ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Jacques Bergeron (new GST artist!)

I was born and grew up around Quebec City, and in my early twenties, I moved to Ontario. For many years I resided in the Beaches area of Toronto and in 2019, I moved to Sutton in Georgina. My love of art manifested early, as a young man I spent all my free time drawing and painting, which eventually led me to study fine arts in high school and college in Quebec and later in Ontario.

In my artistic work, I gravitate toward landscapes, streetscapes, and figure, using pencil, acrylic, watercolour and oil. I always strive to represent the balance between light and dark and the intimate order underlying all things in nature. My latest series of paintings of the shores of the Georgian Bay illustrate this underlying geometry in nature, as well as the ephemeral nature of all things. In this series, which I call the Impermanence Series, I illustrate how the elements (wind and water) affect and create an ever-changing landscape.

I have also worked for many years as a senior designer and project manager in an architectural office. Although separate from my artistic endeavours, my work in architecture has informed and influenced my artistic expression. During economic slow-downs, I also worked painting murals, doing faux-finish and illustration work.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Galina Nikita (new GST artist!) ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Galina Nikita (new GST artist!)

I am an impressionist painter from Moldova who lives and works in Stouffville, Canada. Ever since I was a child, I loved to paint and express myself through colours and shapes. Painting is my passion and my way of connecting with the world.

I am inspired by nature, bold colours, and the endless vastness of the universe. My paintings are a reflection of my inner world and my emotions. I use vibrant hues and expressive brushstrokes to capture the beauty and energy of life. I want to share my vision with others and invite them to free their souls through art.

I admire the impressionist painters who revolutionized art by breaking away from traditional rules and conventions. They taught me how to see light, shadow, texture, and movement in new ways. They also showed me how to paint with spontaneity, honesty, and joy.

My work is influenced by both my Moldovan heritage and my Canadian experience. I draw inspiration from the landscapes, cultures, and people of both countries. I also explore themes such as identity, belonging, diversity, and harmony.

My goal as an artist is to create paintings that evoke positive feelings in the viewers. I hope that my paintings can inspire people to appreciate the beauty of nature, celebrate their uniqueness, and embrace their creativity.

Artist Spotlight: Doris Keppler (new GST artist!) Artist Spotlight: Doris Keppler (new GST artist!)

Born and raised in Peterborough Ontario, I dreamt of being an artist always drawing, painting and sculpting. At the age of 19, I moved to Toronto to obtain my Bachelor of Architecture from Ryerson University (Toronto Metropolitan University). The alternate art form from which I could make a living. I have spent over 25 years running DPK Design serving the fast paced custom residential construction industry in Toronto and around Ontario.

In 2006 Doris with her family moved from Toronto to Georgina-the south shore of Lake Simcoe to offer a country life for her son to grow up in. Inspired by my surrounding landscapes and the architecture of the world she began painting again and even took part in a group show at the Georgina Arts Centre and Gallery in 2016.

In the last few years I was forced to experience great personal change, one of which in 2021 was a catastrophic fire in her home and studio – I have used painting as a tool to heal and try to move forward.

New to the tour! Congratulation to Bill Lunshof for having one of his paintings chosen as the image to represent the 2023 Georgina Studio Tour.

Newmarket based fine artist Bill Lunshof grew up in a Dutch immigrant family and had an interest in the visual arts from an early age. Also an avid gardener and photographer, Bill’s work takes much of its inspiration from nature. He likes to portray rural Ontario scenes and often includes old barns, houses and vehicles in his work. He is fascinated by how light affects the landscape and tries to capture that in his work. He also enjoys painting En Plein Air and can be found with his easel set up in and around his home town of Newmarket when the weather allows.

He is a member of two local art groups – Newmarket Group of Artists where he volunteers his time to help organize their annual Art Walk and Studio Tour and the Society of York Region Artists where he sits on the Executive.
